How Island Block & Paving Achieves Carbon Neutral Masonry Products

At Island Block & Paving, sustainability isn’t just a promise – it’s a process backed by innovation, and third-party certification. We’re proud to be Australia’s first and only masonry manufacturer to achieve Carbon Neutral status across our entire sustainable product range, and we’re committed to sharing exactly how we got there.

carbon neutral manufacturing processes

What Makes Our Products Carbon Neutral?

Achieving true Carbon Neutral certification means taking a proactive, transparent approach to emissions reduction at every stage of production. Our sustainable manufacturing process includes:

Powered by a 100kW Solar Farm

We’ve implemented a sustainable manufacturing process with solar power used in all manufacturing. This removes the reliance on fossil fuels and eliminating carbon emissions during the manufacturing stage.

24 Hour-Nil Energy Curing

Curing is achieved over a 24-hour period using a natural hydration process with supplementary solar power, thanks to our onsite solar farm.

Captured and Reused Water

Water used in the production process is 100% sourced from onsite rainwater capture systems, stored and reused in manufacturing – reducing pressure on local water infrastructure and supporting closed-loop production.

Recycled Glass Replacing Natural Sand

Our products are made with 37.6% engineered sand, consisting of finely crushed recycled glass from kerbside container glass, a sustainable alternative to virgin quartz sand. This diverts waste from landfill and reduces the need for resource-intensive mining.

Cement Replacement

We replace a portion of high-carbon cement with lower-impact alternatives. Combined with low-energy curing and recycled materials, this helps us achieve industry-low carbon emissions.

Emissions Reduction Planning Till 2050

Emissions reduction planning is implemented with initiatives such as battery powered fork lifts, supply chain optimization and continual development research into low embodied carbon products and trials are scheduled over the next two years.

Verified Low Carbon Emissions

Through this integrated approach, our Carbon Neutral masonry products achieve an impressive 114.9 kg CO₂e per tonne – up to 73% lower emissions than some clay brick manufacturers. These results are independently audited and backed by robust certifications, giving you complete confidence in our environmental claims. All remaining carbon emissions are offset annually via Greenfleet, verified by Global Greentag. Current Carbon Neutral certification can be viewed at islandblock.com.au
